WHO WE ARE

At American Meadows, our primary focus is to be great at providing home gardeners with the products and knowledge they need to succeed. We work to accomplish this by combining top-quality products, a staff that’s passionate about what we do, the latest in technology and proven direct-to-consumer methods. Our business is growing through adding new products, creating new brands (such as SeedImpressions.com) and via acquisition (HighCountryGardens.com). We are also expanding to additional channels, such as an increased emphasis on wholesale opportunities. At our core, we work with gardeners – people engaged in a pursuit that brings joy, beautifies the world, supports the environment and often puts food on tables. If that sounds intriguing, read on…

OUR CHALLENGE

Our growth both allows and requires us to maintain a high level of internal capabilities. We develop and maintain our own Magento-based websites which integrate with a SQL-based order processing system. In order to better maximize our various opportunities, we need to continue to build and improve our systems.

WHO YOU ARE & WHAT YOU’D DO

The person we’re looking for has both web development skills and the ability to decipher and manage our SQL-based order, inventory and accounting system (Response by Colinear). Your time would be split between the two.
To excel at the web development role, you’d have a history of delivering excellent web user experiences and a thirst for staying current on best practices. Ideally, your experience would come from an ecommerce environment. Most importantly, you need to be excited about the prospect of helping to identify opportunities and figuring out how to work with our team to execute.

Our order processing system, Response, lies at the heart of our business operations. As the internal owner of this tool, you will be a key go-to person for questions, issues and new functionality. You will learn what the tool can do, what we are trying to achieve, and you will show us how to use it to our best advantage. When it doesn’t do what we need it to do, you will implement changes as necessary. You will be the primary technology contact for our call center.

In both of your roles, you will be responsible for maintenance and development. The balance largely depends on the season; in the gardening business, we spend part of the year building and part of the year hanging on for the ride.

Excellence in this role will be determined by how effectively and efficiently you solve problems and develop functionality. Just as critical is your ability to integrate yourself with our collaborative team and quickly make yourself indispensable.

Below is a basic overview of the desired qualifications. If you or someone you know is interested then Step one is easy: Write a quick summary of a relevant challenge you faced and how you went about solving it, specifying what tools you used in your solution and why you’re proud of the accomplishment. Don’t go overboard – This isn’t a writing exercise, rather a chance to get a sense for how you go about your craft. Also include a resume, but focus on the first aspect as it’s the key to proving that you’re the right fit.

Qualifications:
• BA in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• 3+ years building websites with an emphasis on the Presentation Layer including expertise in PHP, HTML5, CSS3, AJAX, and JavaScript.
• Strong Microsoft SQL skills (TSQL).
• Skilled with slicing PSDs from designers and creating markup from them.
• A base understanding of an integrated order processing, inventory and accounting platform.
• Experience with LAMP based systems and software.
• Crystal Reports experience a strong plus.
• Responsive design concepts a plus.
• Zend Framework or Magento experience is desirable.
• A strong passion for creating dynamic web pages with high-level functionality and usability.
• Previous experience working on large web development projects in a fast-paced online environment interacting with business analysts, information architects, visual designers, web developers and engineers.
• A strong, creative, problem solver, self-motivated and tenacious when tackling tough issues.
• A team player with energy and enthusiasm, and a high tolerance for change and ambiguity.
• Excellent communicator with an interest in continuous improvement of self and the organization.
• Web analytics familiarity (Google Analytics).
• Full life cycle web development (ideation to post launch support).
• Solid understanding of e-commerce architecture, connectivity technologies, web hosting, advanced network protocols, client-server technologies, applications development and multi-vendor environments.
• Success at achieving sophisticated technology goals on-time and on-budget.
• Experience writing and/or interpreting technical specifications and implementing them to specification while potentially adapting to variance in scope.
• Willingness to ‘do what it takes’ to contribute to the success of a small, growing business.
• A knowledge and/or appreciation of gardening is always a plus!
