Summary

The E-commerce Merchant/Analyst conducts research and analysis to provide clarity and drive data-driven decision-making for the National Geographic Store business (www.ngstore.com). Using data from a variety of sources, makes merchandising decisions to drive sales and other key metrics. Develops a variety of reports and presentations to help inform business strategy.

Responsibilities

1. Web Merchandising (40%)
• Develop merchandise promotional calendar to support overall branding objectives and marketing campaigns. Create detailed merchandise plans based on brand positioning and strategic business goals that include sales and contribution performance metrics and forecasts.
• Collaborate with web and merchandising teams to develop merchandise themes and identify product to be featured on website home page and category pages. Work with inventory group on availability of promoted product and adjust promotions as necessary.
• Maintain integrity of product data, including making sure sold-out products are removed, pricing is up-to-date, product information is accurate & well-presented and all assortments are continually updated.
• Evaluate and optimize product family groupings, sort order, site-search tuning, taxonomy, categorization strategies, and cross-sells on a weekly and/or monthly basis.
• Incorporate feedback from customers (via online reviews, social media and interactions with customer service) to ensure that product information is presented clearly and completely.
• Work with design group to create and maintain style guides for photography and site merchandising.
• Maintain comprehensive knowledge of the e-commerce market and online competitors by category. Develop a thorough understanding of the needs, wants, motivations and expectations of online customer segments.
2. Reporting and Analysis (40%)
• Analyze web metrics, sales data and other research to identify product needs and opportunities and communicate them to the merchandising team.
• Develop and distribute weekly web product sales report to include sales, margin, and inventory quantities by SKU, item and category.
• Prepare seasonal line reviews to formally present complete category analysis (including sales, margin, returns, profit and inventory), vendors, competitive review, marketing and growth opportunities.
• Conduct regular and ad hoc analysis projects to support the NG Store business, including competitive research.
3. Marketing (20%)
• Develop product assortments, merchandise themes and promotions for online marketing campaigns, including include email, search, and social media. Work with inventory group on availability of promoted product and adjust promotions as necessary.
• Communicate product and category trends to the Online Marketing Manager to maximize return on investment for the SEO/SEM program. Provide pre-season information to the online search team to ensure the appropriate search buys are planned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education Required

Bachelor’s Degree in related field.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

• 3 years of direct-to-consumer e-commerce merchandising experience.
• Experience working with web content management systems and web analytics applications such as Omniture or Google Analytics.
Knowledge and Skills Required
• Ability to manage a category/products at both the macro- and micro-level .
• Demonstrated business acumen and financial planning skills.
• Expertise in MS Excel advanced functions. Ability to import data from multiple sources into excel in order to manipulate and develop reports to improve decision-making.
• Ability to plan and organize priorities to meet deadlines and balance immediate and long-term needs of the business.
• Detail-oriented, with excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Ability to organize complex information into clear and concise presentations.
• Understanding of industry research, trends and best-practices.
• Knowledge of e-commerce KPIs and how to influence them.
